Protecting Bone Health

July 28, 2016

Every year, more and more Americans are diagnosed with osteoporosis—a disease that causes bones to weaken and puts you at risk for a break. According to the National Osteoporosis Foundation, approximately one in two women and up to one in four men age 50 and older will break a bone due to osteoporosis. And, you may not even know you have this “silent” disease until your bones are so weak that a sudden strain, bump, or fall causes your wrist to break or your hip to fracture.

Fortunately, your Medicare coverage can help you prevent or detect osteoporosis at an early stage when current treatment works best. Your doctor can help you understand if you are at risk, and if so, provide you with information about bone mass measurement testing. Medicare covers this test once every 24 months (more often if medically necessary) when your doctor or other qualified provider orders it. Learn more about risk factors for osteoporosis and how to prevent and treat it at the National Osteoporosis Foundation.
